Off to China

I'm leaving for China in a couple of hours! I may not have internet access so I'm not sure how often I'll be updating. One thing that is for sure is that I'll be doing tons of sketches while I'm over there. See you all in two months!

Cheers!

2008 Portfolio

I thought I'd post my current portfolio so here it is!

First year at Ringling! It all went by so fast! I can't believe there is only a week and half left of school. It's hard to keep focused with summer vacation coming up. In the next week we still have to finish our lip syncs for traditional animation, second lighting project for ca, and another animatic for concept. But ouuu am I looking forward to a summer of traveling, drawing, and maybe working! Oh and don't forget the food!

I'll post some more stuff once school is over.

March is Over!

We made it! March is finally over. It's just finishing up the Sit/Stands now and we'll have some breathing room until the end of the semester. Four more weeks left, and it's China time! I can't wait to go out and sketch more.

Here are some layout designs for my latest animatic from concept class. I'll post some more later.

Pixar is on campus recruiting. I'm excited for the presentation tomorrow! Woo Ringling!

Sit & Stand Walk Cycle

Hiya all! Here's the walk cycle I did with my sit & stand character. We are doing a series of exercises before launching into Sit & Stand which will take up March and beyond. If you think of it that way, the semester doesn't seem long at all. One more month then this final project and POOF! I'll be somewhere else.

It's all going so fast. I should also mention how impressed I am with my fellow sophomores. It's amazing to see how much people have improved since the first semester. Last semester we were all new to animation and maya. That combined with the workload was quite stressful and a lot of the projects left much to be desired. The quality and content of work this semester, however, show tremendous progress. It seems that we are getting comfortable and are slowly starting to explore personal visions instead of still trying to grasp the basic principles. It's just pretty exciting to watch people around me and myself growing everyday.

Girl and the Mouse

Here's some more stuff for concept class.
For this assignment I'm using a childhood memory as my story. When I lived in China my cousin and I were playing outside our grandparents' when the story took place.

Seven Sentence Story:
1. A little girl leaves her apartment home to play outside.
2. As she is playing outside, a tiny mouse comes along.
3. The little girl starts taunting and chasing the mouse.
4. The mouse falls through a sewer grill and hangs on by its tail
5. The girl wants to help the mouse but doesn't want to touch it.
6. The mouse falls to its death.
7. The little girl feels guilty that death resulted from innocent play.

Sit and Stand Maquette

Finally here's my maquette of Vince from winter break. We had to make a maquette of the characters we designed for this semester's computer animation class. This character will be used throughout the semester for various animation exercises.

Snow Day and Art's Day

Student life at Ringling ordered 12 tons of ice to host a "Snow Day" for the college. We arrived a hour late and this was all that's left of the 'snow'. It was fun playing with 'snow' in flipflops and shorts although getting hit by iceballs weren't exactly pleasant. I just had to post this for the people back home with the -20 windchill:P

Here's Donjin checking making iceballs:

Two weekends ago it was the annual Sarasota Arts Day where local artists, associations, and schools gathered in downtown Sarasota to promote the art community. I was there among a few other students to do figure drawing at the Ringling booths. We drew costumed models for three hours per shift. It was a lot of fun though I wish my life sketching skills were more robust. We drew quite a crowd.

There were many artists showing off their talents on locations. There was pottery making, painting on location, ice sculpturing, and weaving! Not to mention all the live music too. The atmosphere was amazing. I wish I could have stuck around more to do some sketches--there were definitely lots of interesting looking people there.

Shots for Concept

Winter break came and went. It was nice to go back to Reelwork and see friends and family. I'm surprised at how excited I was about driving again. It'd a good thing I'm back in Sarasota though. I took too many shopping trips with my car.

Anyway, this semester is starting off pretty busy and I don't think it'll stop until May. At some point I'll post some pics of the maquette I had to made over the break. For now here's some shot designs. For concept design I'm using the story of Cupid and Psyche for a series of studies in composition, light, color, and many other things I'm sure. Here's a few following the rule of thirds.

SASKIA OZOLS

Here's a quick find. I like the looseness in her paintings very much. The horse painting captured the movement so well. For more info on her and her work go to http://www.sorengallery.com/ozols.html. She might have her own site, but this is where I found her stuff.

A Post of Figure Drawings

Here are a few pages from my 30-page intermediate figure final portfolio. Things are finally winding down. Two more animations, an animatic, an art history final, then it's off to Michigan and Minnesota! Before we leave this semester the senior CAs are showing us their theses which are about half done. Dreamworks is also giving another lecture next week. So far Ringling has had demos and talks from Dreamworks, Activition, Reel FX, and Massive Black. Can't wait until next semester when the actual recruiting starts. Should be (even more) exciting!

Endless sleep, good food, and drawing in a week, Woo hoo!

Ps: Special thanks to Robert, without whom I wouldn't have even have thought about using Actions in photoshop on these pages.
